What it is about
The song is about independence, self-definition and the point at which fitting into somebody else's expectations becomes more painful than standing alone. It is ultimately a decision to stop asking for permission and take responsibility for your own direction.
The story behind it
The narrator looks back at the people and expectations that tried to make him smaller, safer or easier to contain. The turning point is accepting that loneliness can be preferable to living a life that isn't yours.
